Sprint and Twitter: sharing taglines…and commercials

April 7th, 2009

Twitter Search tagline: “See what’s happening — right now“.  Sprint commercial tagline: “This is what’s happening now. Sprint,  The Now Network“. (*click the link and you will find the world’s busiest widget – wow).  I found this on the new Sprint commercial featuring the Palm Pre smartphone.  What was most interesting to me was the incorporation of Twitter into their commercial – not just a callout, but a full blown incorporation of the ‘Twitter birds’ flying around the spot.  From my recollection – this is the first time I’ve seen Twitter incorporated in a commercial, visually.  I’m sure it won’t be the last.

The streaming video race, featuring Hulu/YouTube/Netflix/Blockbuster

April 6th, 2009

This type of competition can only mean good things for us, the customer.  In what seems like a recent flurry of activity, we are seeing the major players in the streaming video marketplace positioning themselves for what is turning into a good fight for eyes on their content.  Alliances are forming quickly this year, with  Disney/Hulu and Blockbuster/TiVo leading the news near the end of March and YouTube/Sony and Netflix/MTV both releasing their big news in early April.  We, as consumers of this content, have more and more options moving forward when choosing what to watch, and how to watch it.  Will this impact people subscribing to cable or satellite programming?  I think so…and so does the New York greater metropolitan area.

Intel: in-banner chat for Nehalem

April 3rd, 2009

Continuing the trend for successfully engaging the global customer where they are naturally doing their research, we (Intel) are reprising the in-banner chat program – this time, focusing on Nehalem (Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series).

Great write-up in MediaPost about this…they hit the nail on the head with this quote:

Intel’s conversational marketing initiative is an example of a major brand using new, two-way communication banner-ad applications to increase consumer interaction and build relationships with the brand by engaging them where they are, without the need to click into a separate site.

The chat continues today (April 3rd) between 10am and 12pm PDT on CIO Today, CNET-TechRepublic, ZDNet, Computerworld.com, IDG TechNetwork, Information Week, InfoWorld, Internet.com and LinkedIn.com.

Facebook profiles on TV commercials – a new trend?

April 2nd, 2009

I’ll admit – I fast forward commercials when watching programs I’ve DVR’d.  Very few catch my attention.  One did last night – Vitamin Water.  I’ve seen plenty of 30 second spots in the last year that offer up a web address at the end.  I’ve never seen one that showed the address of their Facebook profile page – until yesterday.  Well done Vitamin Water.  I did some digging online and found this post “VitaminWater Launches Primetime Facebook Promotion” on All Facebook.  I think we’re going to be seeing this more and more.

*Sidenote, the author of All Facebook is clearly not a basketball fan as he is assuming that Steve Nash (or on Twitter) is the founder of Vitamin Water.

The VitaminWater page currently includes a number of videos about Steve Nash (who I’m guessing is the founder)….”  Ahem, not so much…. Apparently he didn’t recognize Kobe, LeBron, or CP3 either…

April Fool’s Day – talk about going viral!

April 1st, 2009

April Fool’s Day is rampant with fake news stories and hoax’s on the internet.  The one that may have gotten the largest viral spread was pulled off by Federated Media’s Founder and Chairman, John Battelle.  Twitter is hot – and it’s suitors are many.  Every day there is a new rumor about who’s in the running to buy the microblogging service.  John’s prank today about News Corp. winning the bidding war @ a whopping $750M was blazing up all the social and traditional media outlets…  hitting the likes of Yahoo, Business Week, and yes…Twitter itself.  Well done John – you were the ‘talk’ of the virtual town today…
